Who we are
Betty’s Caring Hands is a non-profit organization that is committed to providing students from ages 12 to 18 who attend inner-city schools with a nurturing environment to promote academic achievement through after- school mentorship and education programs. Through these interactive programs some of the issues that we focus on are instrumental in helping students to address are bullying, peer pressure, self-esteem, good mental and physical health, suicide, teen pregnancy, drug addiction and gang violence.
Our Mission
Betty’s Caring Hands provides programs that are dedicated to empowering low to moderate income individuals within marginalized communities by offering educational programs for students, resources and vital community support connection. Our programs provide important building blocks for Betty’s Caring Hands mission of nurturing the whole person academically, emotionally and socially with a core emphasis on educational intervention.
Our Founder & CEO
Jamela Jones is a Dallas Native and the Founder and CEO of Betty’s Caring Hands. She earned her B.S. degree in Social Work from Jarvis Christian College and has worked in the social service industry for over 12 years. She has been employed at Dept. of Family & Protective Services (APS-Adult Protective Services), TX Dept. of Health & Human Services (SNAP-Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), TDJC (Texas Department of Criminal Justice) Juvenile Division and Texas Department of Public Safety.
Throughout her career, Jamela has had a particular interest in the interface between mental & physical health and generational poverty and the role that education, mentoring and indigenous leadership can play in decreasing the stigma within inner-city communities and promoting greater understanding of mental illness and its treatment. She believes that early exposure to education and treatment is key.
Jamela’s grandmother and Matriarch of her family Ms. Betty Nell Johnson gave her a servant’s heart for people and she is deeply committed to giving back to the community and has provided both financial support and countless hours of community service while using her personal life stories as an example to inspire and mentor young people.
